# Question Settings

> Configure points, negative points, time limits, and other settings available on individual Socratease questions.

Every question in a Socratease quiz has its own settings for scoring, timing, and behavior. These are separate from the quiz-wide settings covered in [Quiz Settings](/socratease-quiz-settings).

## Points and Negative Points

**Points** sets how many points a candidate earns for a correct answer. **Negative Points** lets you deduct points for an incorrect answer, useful for discouraging random guessing on MCQ and MCA questions.

Enter a value manually, or click the **calculator icon** next to Negative Points to auto-calculate it based on the number of options:

For example, an MCQ worth 2 points with 4 options gets 2 ÷ 4 = 0.5 Negative Points.

  Auto-calculation is only available for **MCQ** questions. For MCA questions, enter Negative Points manually.

## Advanced Question Settings

Click the **three-dot menu** (⋮) in the top-right corner of any question to open its advanced settings.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Time Limit** | Sets a per-question timer. This only takes effect when the quiz uses **one-by-one without navigation** display mode. See [How Timer Settings Change](/question-display-mode#how-timer-settings-change). |
| **Cannot Skip** | Makes the question mandatory. Candidates cannot move to the next question or submit the quiz without answering it. |
| **Markdown** | Renders the question text and options as [Markdown](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown), useful for formatting code snippets or other structured text. |
| **Shuffle Choices** | Randomizes the order options appear in for each candidate. See [Choice Shuffling](/socratease-quiz-settings) for how this works at the quiz level. |
| **Tags** | Label the question for filtering and grouping in results. See [Using Tags](/using-tags). |
| **Feedback** | Optional text shown to the candidate below their response, if quiz results are visible to them. See [Showing Results to Candidates](/show-results-to-candidates). |
